Fame rescue crews were dispatched shortly after 5 pm today to a business in the 300 block of Snyder Ave in West Goshen Township for a confined space rescue. Assistant 53 requested an upgraded dispatch to include the Chester County Rescue Task Force. Fame is an integral member of the Rescue Task Force, the upgraded dispatch brought additional specially trained personnel from Lionville Fire Company and Medic 2 out of Berwyn Fire Company. Due to the incident location's proximity to the firehouse, Fame units were on scene within 5 minutes of dispatch. Crews were faced with a very challenging scene; a young child had fallen through a 10" wide pipe into a septic tank several feet below the surface. The child was holding onto a rope placed by his mother but was not secured. Rescue 53's crew began rescue efforts. The air space was monitored, and supplemental air was blown into the space. Anticipating and planning for a longer incident duration, additional resources from East Goshen Township Public Works were requested to the scene. Crews utilized pole snares to secure the child and once secured he was raised out of the tank to awaiting EMS personnel. He was assessed by ALS providers and transported to a local pediatric medical facility. Total time from Rescue 53 arrival to victim removal was 27 minutes.

Fame crews train frequently to maintain specialized technical rescue skills. The training paid dividends on this incident!

Thank you to all who assisted on this successful rescue,

Rescue 47 (Lionville)
Medic 2 (Berwyn)
